NC56NW 1 5355 6801.

This feature is a broad, shallow depression cut in a arc in the peat against the edge of a 800ft cliff. Between this and the cliff edge is a raised terrace and the seaward side of the ditch is revetted with a stone wall. The course of this wall is shown on the OS 6" map of 1876. The level top of the terrace is about 2ft above the bottom of the ditch. The space between the wall and the brink is never more than a few yards wide, although doubtless reduced by erosion. Visited by R.Lamb 1980.

NB. The only wall shown on the 1st Ed 6" is that shown on the 1962 map.

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.
