Full Description
A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.
Five stone courses of a rectangular building remain of a roofed building shown on the 1863 OS map. The main extension is 10.6m E/W with a possible byre extension c 4m long, to the east. The doorway, with stone step is 4.6m N/S and lm wide. There is no evidence of windows remaining. The stone building blocks are c 0.6 - 0.7m in length, well-faced and dressed with lime mortar, apart from these of the eastern extension which appears to have been constructed of drystone rubble. The building stands to 1.5m on the remaining west and north sides. The building is at the south end of a D-shaped kailyard terrace which is 10.5m N/S and 15m E/W, corresponding to the length of the building. The terrace is stone faced on the north and east sides, at the downslope end, and here is 0.65m above natural ground level. Also present on the terrace are the footings of a circular stone structure 4m to the north of the building and 2m in diameter. The building probably stands on an earlier site. <1>
