Full Description

A listed early C19 farm steading at Applecross Mains.

The building complex was Listed at Category C in 1983.

Applecross Mains, a mid-19th-century farm sqaure, is flanked by the Crac Barn of the same period. <1>

Still present (but largely painted red) within caravan park site. Remains of water mill machinery on the lane (N) side and wheel pit. Mill wheel machinery recently retrieved from Crait Barn site that is being re-developed - HAW 5/2003

A survey of the steading buildings was carried out in 2012 by a group supervised by C Dagg in 2012 as part of the Applecross Archaeology Training Project, funded by ALPS. The mains was selected for the training project as it was of considerable historical interest, had undergone several phases of modification and was effectively redundant for farming purposes in its present form. The steading is now mostly redundant and much of the accessible space is given over to storage. While it seems to be mostly in a stable condition, a thorough survey will probably reveal incursion of rainwater, rot and many other potentially damaging conditions. The water wheel, mechanism and original fixed threshing machine have been removed, and the free standing threshing machines could be housed elsewhere. <2>
