A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

As described by John Hume in the NMRS (and in Hume, 1977, 313). Located adjacent to the modern road is a mortared stone mill building which still has its roof in place. The upper floor of this structure is currently being used as a store with bales of wool being stored there at the time of this survey. There are enclosures and smaller auxiliary buildings at the west which are now unroofed. This mill is in reasonable condition although minus the wooden superstructure of the roof. <1>
