Full Description

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

A mill below Loch an Eilein mentioned by Elizabeth Grant in 1827. The lade leaves the stream 45m below the foot of Loch an Eilein, and extends about 150m, 24m floor and 3m retaining bank. 45m above the mill, two lines of stones possibly mark a sluice. 25m above the mill is a diversion to a stream. The end of the lade, 11m from the stream, narrows over 5m to 14m wide; the water was probably carried on a trestle past end of one building to a wheelpit/penstock. This building is on the west side of the lade, 7m on line x 8m. The wheelpit is flanked on the east by a 2m wide ridge 14m long with 3m foundation against it on the stream side. A projection 4m long and 2m deep is possibly one of supports for the wheel. At 4m north of the first building is another on two levels 10 x 52m. The tail race extends about 20m beyond the wheelpit, to about 12m above modern bridge. The vicinity has been landscaped and I understand the wheel and other remains have been buried on the site. <1>
