Full Description

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

A group of structures, probably connected with forestry operations, SE of Loch an Eilein on a well laid wide trackway, built up on causeways across hollows and valleys. Foundation 8 x 5m, a 5m square stone platform, projecting 2m across the present streamline so that it is carried in a drain within the structure. 7 x 6 m incomplete rectangle and 7m square mound. The first and last have large Scots Pines growing out of them, indicating possibly 18th century date. 130m north beside track, a platform of stones 8 x 5m possibly for stacking timber. Site may represent a sawyers camp of the sort described by Elizabeth Grant in 1812, as being in use before the construction of a sawmill at Inverdruie. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 26/1/26)
