Full Description

A farmstead, comprising two roofed and two unroofed buildings is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lxxiii), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975).

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

Balvattan (incorporated with Tullochgrue as one holding 1877) The foundations are ranged round a sub-rect. Courtyard 22m by 11 to 12m, aligned NE to SW from the slopes of a rocky knoll. The west range along a boundary wall is 31 x 5m (possibly 3 houses end-to-end), cut through by a modern track. From this across NE side of yard foundation 9 x 6m. On east side remains of 16 x 7m building, SE of which is possible silage pit. 13m east of this building a rectangular enclosure 25 x llm N-S, at NW angle of which, on crest of rocky knoll, is a possible kiln formed of two square chambers, 8 x 42 overall and oval foundation 6 x 4Im. West of main group of buildings a longhouse 20 x 5m aligned NNE-SSW and 15m SW foundation 12 x 6m. In bushes. <1>
