Full Description
A farmstead, comprising one unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lxxiii). One unroofed building of two compartments is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975).

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.
Rianachan is a ruined longhouse inhabited until early this century, which in 1812 is described by Elizabeth Grant as the masons'cottage. In relation to the extant ruin are the following foundations: 12m south (& 3m east) 10 1/2m x 5m, with lower walled terrace east 2.5m widening south to 7m; 22m east 10.5 x 5m with adjacent enclosures & 3m south of same, E-W 9 x 5 m poorer foundation; on an eminence WSW (21m from site 14) 15 x 4m and at south end 42m diameter; 18m north of ruin 9 x 5m and 32m northof ruin a fine storage pit, drystone lined, 42 x 2m int accessed by inclined passage near NE corner; also several rectangles NNE of ruin, and 15m east of site 14, 8 x 4m rect and a rough square. <1>
Walter Dempster was told by someone whose father-in-law was brought up there that there was still the “Merchant” sign above the door when he was young. There are other foundations in the area. <2>
