Full Description
A farmstead, comprising one roofed building, two unroofed buildings and one enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lxxiii). Three sides of an unroofed structure which may be a building is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975).

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.
At Cairn a complex centred on a rectangular enclosure 24 x 20 m, aligned E-W approx. contained in a loop of an old track ascending from Cairn Valley Cottage. On north is a possible silage pit in a rectangular mound and an enclosure 15m N-S by 14m with foundation 14 x 4m across N side, these two occupying full width of north side of central enclosure. On south is a slightly curved sub-rectangular 2-roomed foundation 14 x 6m, two adjacent scoops out of edge of slope, SW part embanked, each overall 7m diameter, large stone between and south of curved foundation, base of slope, rough oval. west of central enclosure, at foot of slope below SW corner, 92 x 4m in what appears to have been an oval enclosure across slope 19 x 11m. east of central enclosure and along south flank of a boundary wall in line with south side of enclosure, a rectangle 8 x 52 and at 20 m east an L- shaped foundation 17 x 5 m main E-W arm, short arm 5 x 4m south of est end. 70 m south of main enclosure an outlying steading comprising 3 parallel rectangles, 9 x 4m part joined to 14 x 5m, and 8 x 4m, with east of these rough enclosure 13 x 14 m. flanking a N-S boundary wall. 15 m north of the silage pit a circular pit 3m d floor, 2 m deep, embanked round overall 10m diameter. 55m NNE of central enclosureon a steep sided eminence a foundation 18 x 7m the central room of 3 projecting 2m east. <1>
