Full Description

Fieldwork in this area by Dr T C Welsh has revealed a variety of archaeological features.
NH 888 093 The Drum Possible dun

At the base of a curved promontory, a complex of features centred on a dun—like enclosure or scooped out knoll. There are foundations on the promontory, and a possible enclosure to south (see fig.4) The principal feature is an oval enclosure on an eminence, 20 m E-W by 16 m overall with an entrance on south, internally 11 x 7 m including the rising sides of the hollow. There is some structure to the "wall" which is up to 5 m thick, but it could have been wholly or partly created by quarrying into the knoll. A sub-oval enclosure can be traced around a hollow to the south, up to 45 m E-west by up to 28 m south, part of this wall being seen on the slope SE of the dun, but a 19th century bank and ditch and a track cross this. On the main part of the promontory, in appearance like the bailey accompanying a motte, but with the east side a raised ridge ridge linking the dun to the east arm, is a 7 m square enclosed on three sides by 4 m bank. On the east spur is an oval foundation 15 x 52m over low wall remains with possibly a second 10 m long. An enclosure and other features to north and the boundary bank are listed under miscellaneous. <1>
