Full Description

Fieldwork in this area by Dr T C Welsh has revealed a variety of archaeological features:
Rieonachan; Dun

On a shoulder south of settlement of Rianachan in Cairn Valley (fig 8a), under a cover of heather, gorse and some bracken, this site is difficult to see on the ground, and needs careful searching to identify. It consists of a hut circle 9m diameter over 2m wall, and a hut 5 m across contained in two circuits of defence formed by large rocks interspersed with rubble. The inner circuit is a rough wall up to 5m thick, locally with traces of inner and outer facings, enclosing an area 22 m diameter. The outer is up to 4m thick, bowed out to NNE to include some lower ground up to 8 m from the inner wall; the whole site c50m across.

On west a small structure, possibly reworked as a shelter, around a large stone, is the only obvious clue to the existence of the site. Because of the thickness of the inner wall the site might almost constitute a dun, but the rough construction is less convincing; also the site has similar, less substantial parallels in this locality. <1>
