Full Description

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

On the east slopes of Ord Ban, on a small eminence overlooking the path between the car park and information cottage at Loch an Eilein, at about 310m 0.D is a variant of (14) and (15) illustrated in fig 8c. In this case the central component is a mound 9m diameter, with an interior scoop 3 m across, opening on south through a gap 1 m wide widening to li. There are some edge placed stones on the perimeter. The appearance is dun-like, but bracken cover prevented scrutiny. This is enclosed by a very rough wall, sometimes large stones, sometimes rubble, difficult to trace in the bracken, in which the "dun" is offset to within 5m of perimeter on south, overall diameter 19m. Merging with this wall on east and west, but extending NW by up to 18m is a 2-3 m rubble wall; this includes some level ground 10 m deep at the base of the knoll. There is a 6m hut just outside this. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 21/1/26)
