Full Description
A farmstead comprising one roofed building and one unroofed building is depicted on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1880, sheet cx). Two unroofed buildings and three sides of an enclosure are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 6 May 1996.
The abandoned farmstead of Lagnacopaig is sited in the SW corner of the surveyed area. The buildings are situated towards the E edge of a drained area of grassland which has been cleared of stones. A nearby spring provided the supply of fresh water. Part of the farmstead is one of the most recent structures in the area, some of the remaining walls being mortared and rendered. But the less substantial remains show no sign of mortar and it seems likely that the site has been used for a number of buildings over time.
The remains consist of a series of rectangular structures aligned NE-SW. That to the NE is grass-covered, has a rounded NE end, and is c10m by c4.8m over walls spread to c1m and up to 0.5m high. A square structure has been set against its SW end, c4m by 4m over walls spread to c1 m and up to 0.7m high. There is a gap of 5m to the upstanding remains of the rendered farm building, which is c9m by c5m over walls c0.8m thick and in places over lm high. An enclosure is sited immediately SE of the main building, formed by a low grass-covered bank c0.6m wide and c0.2m high. Immediately E of the farmstead is a small 'U' shaped structure, aligned SE-NW, c1 .2m wide and 4m long over walls c0.7m wide and c0.3m high.
The areas S and N of the buildings at Lagnacopaig have been intensively used in the past. Some areas have been cleared of stones - there are field clearance heaps on the hill slope to the S - and there are numerous field boundary dykes which divide the land into small fields. <1>
