Full Description

This stone and turf dam across the Milton Burn, was recorded during a pre-afforestation survey at Craig Pityoulish and Craiggowrie. The dam measures over 30m in length by 4.5m in width and is 1.8m in high. The burn has broken through the dam in two places. A large quarry in the hillside to the west is undoubtedly the source for the materials used in its construction. Condition: Some parts of the dam are being actively eroded by the river but it is grass-covered and stable over most of its length. <1>

A mill dam and sluice, shown on the OS 1st edition map, which once served the sawmill at Milton (see NH91SW0008). The lade leading from it is still visible and still working, diverting a stream to a small pond and sluice just above the site of the mill.
