Technique(s)

Organisation

Headland Archaeology Ltd

Date

25 June 1999

Description

The survey covers an area of approximately 4.8 km² on the northern slopes of Craig Pityoulish and Craiggowrie and the intervening valleys some 3 km northeast of Aviemore, Highland. The area covered supports several distinct vegetation types which impacted strongly on the level of survey possible in the different zones. After an initial desk-based survey, the survey area was walked systematically and all features of archaeological interest were described. Detailed survey was undertaken using a Total Station EDM. Photographs, including both prints and transparencies were taken of selected features to illustrate site location, nature and condition, as appropriate. Vegetation cover was a major factor in the completeness of the survey data. Dense juniper scrub, conifer plantations and rank heather covered much of the site and it is likely that some sites have been obscured. Boundaries evident in the field often differed significantly from those on the maps provided. In such cases the limits of survey as marked on the maps were taken as the boundary. Weather conditions during survey were dry and clear. <1>
