Full Description
A township comprising two unroofed and seven roofed buildings is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet xv). The township contains four unroofed and five roofed buildings and several enclosures on the current OS 1:10,560 map (1961). Three of the roofed buildings on the 1st edition OS 6-inch are part of Portnancon Fishing Station at NC 427 603 (NC46SW 5.01).
Information from RCAHMS (FO) 14 August 1995.
The SE part of the township of Portnancon fell within the area surveyed. This township is described in the NMRS from cartographic sources (OS 6-inch map, Sutherland 1878, sheet xv and OS 1:10,560 map, 1961, NC 46 SW). Recorded on the ground by this survey was a 13 m long building by 5 m over walls 0.6 m thick. There are the remnants of a fire-place and a window-recess in the south wall as well as an entrance in the west wall. This structure is within a rectangular enclosing yard which extends from the NW corner of the building and runs north for 8 m. The enclosure-wall then turns 90° and runs east for 16 m. The east wall of this enclosure forms the W wall of a further structure which extends outside the enclosure. This measures 11 m N-S by 4.2 m and is tri-compartmental with entrances in the south end of the west wall and in the north end of the east wall. The grassed slope at the east of this structure has been revetted with dry-stone walling to prevent land-slip. There is an entrance to the enclosure at the SE corner. At the south of the enclosure is a further linear dyke and the fragmentary remains of another south of this. There is also some evidence that the stream Allt Portnancon, on the east side of which this complex sits, has been artificially channelled to protect the site.
