Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

The footings of a rectangular building with a corn kiln at the north end were found here. The kiln is circular and has footings 4.1m in external diameter, E/W and 5m N/S with walls lm thick. At the north end, the footings stand to 0.9m above ground level. The main building is 25.9m in length N/S, and 5.96m wide E/W at its S end and 4.9m wide E/W at its N end. A room division, with no obvious entrances into the space is visible 7m from the north end of the main building. The flue from the corn kiln opens into this room and is 2m in length. At the south end of the building the stone footings stand to 0.4m consisting of turf covered rubble. The corner stones and those of the kiln only appear to be dressed. This structure appears as a roofed building on the 1863 OS map. <1>
