Full Description

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 11: The inlet of Tairbeart, on the west side of the isthmus between Brochel and Amish, forced Calum McLeod (Calum the Road) to take his road round a steep bend, at the apex of which enough flattish ground is available for a complex fank. A well built, substantial stone dyke [A], 1.50m high, runs north-south the length of the inlet to form a baseline for the feature. A wall [B] is built onto the dyke forming a D shaped enclosure, 24m long on its straight, eastern side and a maximum of 13m wide. There is a 1.80m wide entrance at the western apex. This enclosure wall is roughly built compared to the dyke and its southern portion is reduced to revetment supporting loose scree behind. The northern quadrant is freestanding but poorly built to a maximum height of 1.20m with several butt joints in its length. In the middle of this quadrant is a 0 20m wide gable end of an earlier building onto which the enclosure is butt joined.

Within the enclosure is a pen, 5.50m by 3m, enclosing a sheep dip [C] with two compartments, one with a concrete floor leading to a concrete dipping tank. The burn flowing past the west side has been led in a culvert from the dipping tank to outside the main enclosure. A tin shed, still with its roof and door, is built onto the outside of the south wall of the pen. On the east side of the dyke rough oval compartments, defined by coarse walling, are built into the scree to the northeast. <1>
