Full Description

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 13: A major stone boundary wall runs right across the isthmus from Tairbeart southeast between Creag Bhan and Sithean Mor. North of this dyke and about 150m north of feature 7, is a stony, circular structure, 4m in diameter, with walls 1.30m thick standing to a height of 0.50m in places. On its southwest edge the structure is intersected by the dyke and appears to pre-date it, its circularity not deferring to the dyke. There is no obvious entrance. There is a substantial irregular area with leading dimensions approximately 50m by 50m, close to the north of the structure, which has been cultivated at some time. The area comprises most of the gently sloping ground between rocky outcrops and contains at least three patches of rig running in different directions. The rig stands to 0.30m in places and is all at 2.50m to 3m centres. This structure and the adjacent rig are interpreted as probably the relatively temporary exploitation of marginal cultivable land for subsistence farming at a time of population pressure in the early 19th century at Arnish. In normal times the area would probably have formed part of a shieling. <1>
