Full Description

A degraded hut circle at Kingsburgh, Skye.

A hut circle was recorded by M Wildgoose in 2003 during an additional walkover survey in advance of a proposed forestry Woodland Grant Scheme at Kingsburgh, Skye. Lying on a west-facing terrace some 3200m to the northeast of Dun Adhanh are the degraded remains of a stone-built roundhouse which measures 11m in diameter over walls which have spread circa 2m in width. The southwest side of the roundhouse has been incorporated into a later boundary dyke producing a distinctive curve in its line. A large upright stone (door post) stands on the southeast perimeter of the roundhouse wall. A multi-period enclosure system lies all around the site. <1>

141305 854649 Kingsburgh 16 EB225: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. EB225 is reported as M Wildgoose Site12 in Kingsburgh Archaeological Survey 2003. This circular stone structure lies 200m NE from Dun Adhamh on a built up platform dug into the gentle W facing slope. There is a lot of stone tumble beneath the turf. The interior is covered with bracken. The SW side of the HC has been incorporated into a later boundary dyke which curves to take in the HC wall. An orthostat, probably a door post, height 0.4m stands at the entrance. All around the HC is a multi-period enclosure system. This HC lies between two enclosure walls (see sketch). Average inner diameter is 5.85m, outer diameter is 8m. Double skinned wall thickness is 1m with max height 0.7m. Entrance is orientated to SE, external and internal widths are 0.9m, entrance length is 1m. To E of EB225, and 20m upslope, lies a possible house platform with no sign of any stones. <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details]

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 1999-2001 vertical APs [IS-L 08/02/2017].
