Full Description

A well-preserved boat-shaped structure associated with a hut circle.

A boat-shaped structure was recorded by M Wildgoose in 2003 during an additional walkover survey in advance of a proposed forestry Woodland Grant Scheme at Kingsburgh, Skye. Lying at the foot of the slope below the northwest flankk of Creag an Locha and just to the northwest of a prominent stone and turf boundary dyke are the remains of a well-preserved boat-shaped structure, associated with a hut circle (see MHG38861). It lies 6m to the north of the hut circle. It is of identical construction to the roundhouse. The structure is aligned southwest-northeast and is 12m long by 5m wide over walls 1.4m thick. The southwest end of the structure is rounded but the northeast end tapers to a point. An entrance 0.7m wide, lies in the north wall. A multi-period enclosure systyem lies all around the site. <1>

140770 855910 Kingsburgh 10 EB219: The structure was visited by A Welti and A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. Reported as M Wildgoose Site 15 in Kingsburgh Archaeological Survey 2003 (see EB218). This boat shaped structure lies 6m to N of HC EB218 (see MHG38861). Its structure is aligned SW/NE. Its construction seems similar to that of EB218 although the shape differs. On the short axis inner width is 2.3m, outer width is 5.2m, and on the long axis inner length is 10.0 m, outer length is 13.4m. Double skinned wall thickness is 1.2m, max height is 0.6m. There is a possible entrance beside a fallen orthostat in W wall. <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details]

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 1999-2001 vertical APs [IS-L 08/02/2017].
