Full Description

A hut circle (38 - No.5 of 14) was recorded by M Wildgoose in 1999 at Cille Mhaire Glen, Strathaird, Skye, during a walkover survey in advance of a proposed forestry Woodland Grant Scheme for the John Muir Trust. The remains of one of two almost identical stone hut circles measuring 6.5m in diameter. The two are 5m apart. <1>

The site was included by M Wildgoose in a catalogue of hut circles which combined the results of surveys on the Strathaird, Torrin and Sconser Estates. It lies in a shallow heather-covered depression at the foot of the southeast flank of Slat Bheinn, close to the old Camasunary track. A sub-circular earth and stone bank, 1m thick and 0.3m high, which retains part of its now robbed stone facing. The bank surrounds an interior which measures 4m by 4.5m in diameter. The wall expands to 1.5m in thickness at the southeast facing entrance. A single celled shieling lies in the northwest quadrant of the interior. <2>
