Full Description

A hut circle at Shurrery, Caithness.

The feature was recorded by C Dagg during a pre-afforestation project walkover survey in 2004. Settlement, centred on ND 0334 5706. A settlement of eight possible hut circles and one possible burnt mound, occupying slight knolls on the ridge of well-drained ground. No evidence for field boundaries or field clearance cairns were noted, although these may be concealed by a thin peat cover. Site 8b: ND 0332 5700 Within faint grassy banks forming a circle 5.5m in diameter are a number of set stones, including one massive stone set upright to form the west interior wall of this circle. The other stones appear to form a rectangular structure which may not be contemporary with the hut circle, or may be internal furniture and a hearth. <1>
