Full Description
A DBA and walkover survey were carried out by GUARD in 2009 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Glenmorie.
Site 0: The Rev. Alexander Flyter, in New Statistical Account of Scotland (1840) notes a story associated with Clach Nam Ban. Clach Nam Ban means 'Stone of the Women' and the story involves the tale of several women being caught out in a snow storm on their way to the chapel at Kildermorie. The women and their load of hemp/flax took shelter in the natural gap in the rock out crop but subsequently perished there during the prolonged snow storm.
The site consists of two very large glacial erratics or natural bedrock outcrops situated on top of a small summit. On the northern side of the stones a gap exists between the two rocks 1.5 m at the opening tapering c. 10 m back to a point. This forms a sheltered area although there is no covering on the top. A small cairn is located on top of the highest rock. Natural formation associated with a tradition that several women died here after taking refuge from a bad snow storm which resulted in its name: 'Clach
Nam Ban' or 'Stone of the Women'. <1>
