Full Description

The remains of a limekiln or possible cairn at Achlachan.

It is shown labelled as 'Old Limekiln' on the OS 1st Edition 1:2500 map. <1>

It is visible as a depression and mound in vertical aerial photography and is c.10m in total diameter. <2>

The feature was noted during a walkover survey by Headland Archaeology in 2012 in advance of a proposed wind farm at Achlachan. However, it was thought to be a possible cairn. In addition, although it is included in the list of sites found, no description was included in the subsequent Environmental Impact Assessment. <3>

The site was included in an updated Environmental Impact Assessment for a southern extension to the proposed wind farm. <4>

The site was visited by Headland Archaeology in 2018 during a watching brief on the sections of the access tracks to the new turbine bases that passed by the bases (most of the access tracks across the site employed 'floating' construction so did not require archaeological monitoring). The cairn (HA1) located near Turbine 5 was interpreted as a prehistoric feature likely to have been exposed through peat cutting. It was considered possible that the circular feature cut into the side of the cairn was the remains of a shelter or peat-store. No archaeological features were observed during groundworks in the vicinity of the cairn. <5>
