Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by J G Robertson in 1996 as part of an environmental impact assessment for a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme application. The assessment consisted largely of the detailed study of a single 1988 aerial photograph.

Site 2. Circular Features: One large circular feature, against the south boundary wall of the field system, No. 1, and a linear series of at least four smaller circular and sub-circular features to the south of the wall. These could be prehistoric hut-circles, shielings or features of natural topography.

Recommation: Ground inspection; field survey, if necessary. <1>

A follow-up full walkover survey was conducted by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996.

Site 2 name: Smirisar

Description: A large circular feature and a linear group of four smaller circular features provisionally identified from the AP were found to be features of natural topography and therefore are not of archaeological interest.
