Full Description
Remains of a farmstead at Edinbane. It was recorded by M Wildgoose in 2006 during a walkover survey in the areas of two proposed borrow pits for works associated wth the Edinbane Wind Farm.
Site 1: At the base of the southern side of a prominent rocky outcrop, some 50 m to the northwest side of the farm access track, and now partially covered by wind blown conifers is a ruinous, stone-built farmstead. The farmstead is made up of a longhouse with a byre to its northeast side. Both structures have rounded external corners. The long-house lies on a north to south alignment and measures 15 m long by 5.5 m wide over walls 1.2 m thick and 1 m high. A door opening 1 m wide lies at the southern end of the east facing wall. The byre lies 2 m to the northeast of the house on a northwest to southeast alignment, and measures 8 m long by 6.0 m wide over walls 1.5 m thick. A door opening 0.9 m wide lies in the centre of the northeast facing wall. The wind-blown conifers made it difficult to be certain, but there appeared to be no further associated structures or walls. <1>
NOTE: on vertical aerial photographs c.63m directly north of the NGR given in <1> for Site 1 there is an almost identical site, comprising a longhouse and byre, where the buildings lie in the opposite orientations of those given in Site 1's descripton a short length of dyke can also be seen to its immediate west - see MHG65511. If this is not actually Site 1 (and it probably isn't as there are no wind blown trees partly obscuring it) then it is strange it was not seen by M Wildgoose in 2006 as it lay completely in the open [IS-L 26/01/2026].
