Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

Spanning the Daill River at Daill House is a wood and steel bridge. This bridge has a 46 m span supported on concrete and steel piers at either end and on poles set in rocks meshed together with heavy duty wire in the middle. This modern bridge overlies an old ford across the river which is constructed from laid setts covering an area 5.5 m wide and visible for 7 m out into the river from the south bank but not visible at the north bank. The ford is partly obscured by river shingle washed over it but appears to have been entirely washed away at the north bank. The ford, being the fore¬runner of the bridge, may be of some antiquity and has been clearly damaged by both the flow of the river and the building of that bridge. The occupant of Daill house reported that the bridge is to be removed and this is likely to further damage the ford.<1>
