Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

Visible in a small land-slip in a steep, grassed slope at the rear of a shingle beach is a 2 m long and 0.3 m thick layer of shell. This is possibly the remnants of a midden and the layer may line the base of a pit-shaped cut. The shells are in a dark brown, sandy-silt matrix and include periwinkles and limpets. Further landslip in this area will remove the exposed section of this possible midden. <1>
