Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

Visible in an erosion scar, 7 m east of the stone spread, is a thin band (0.03 m thick) of brown sand with abundant organic particles and charcoal flecks which lies between layers of pale brown, windblown sand and is 2 m long, lying 0.5 m below the present ground surface. The organic deposit may be an old agricultural layer.<1>
