Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On a steep, grassed slope above the cliffs at the east side of the bay are the remnants of a stone dyke running E-W downslope and curving slightly. This feature is visible as a turf-clad bank with occasional stones apparent in the fabric. The dyke is on average 1 m wide and stands up to 0.45 m high and is better preserved east of the modern fence-line than at the west. The dyke runs from the cliff-edge to the modern fence where it turns to run SE after a possible entrance through its line. This dyke continues to run to 2 m short of the modern road, turning to run SSE-NNW for the last 10 m. <1>
