Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On a grassed area adjacent to a modern house at the back of the beach is a longhouse. This measures 23.5 m long by 4.5 m wide, with walls 0.8 m thick, and consists of at least three rooms. The south end of this building has a fourth compartment adjoining which is a corn-drying kiln. The circular bowl of this kiln has a diameter of 1.1 m. The whole structure is set within a yard defined by a dry-stone dyke which utilises and expands on areas of natural outcropping at the W and NE. There is also a trackway which skirts the N of the building and a later stone dyke at the E which has been built over the track. The site has been robbed for stone and the bowl of the corn-drier has been used recently for burning rubbish. <1>
