Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On a grassy slope beside the storm-beach, a scooped sub-rectangular feature is located. This is defined by low banks on the west, north and south sides, and on the east a line of sporadic stones suggest that a wall may have crossed the end of the building. The fabric of the banked walls appears to have been of turf-clad stone. Aligned down a slope and measuring 7 m by 4 m, the west half of the interior is sloping, with a distinct dip in the slope mid-way. The east half of the construction is flatter and appears to have been terraced into the slope. This may have been used as the platform for a shed or outbuilding.<1>
