Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

Running along a cliff at the east of Port Vasgo is a stretch of revetted pathway. The path is 1.5 wide and is dry-stone revetted along 30 m. This is large-scale revetment which is up to 2.5 m high or 13-15 courses. The revetment has been built up the cliff-face at the landward side of the path and protects the path which follows the contour up to the raised ground at the east. There are now a number of water-courses running down this stretch of the path from the raised ground above and from the cliff-face, which has washed away any surface the path had above the bedrock which is now exposed. This is a well-built and enigmatic feature as it does not seem to lead to anywhere and is somewhat monumental for simply an animal path to coastal pasture. This should be surveyed in association with the settlement at Port Vasgo. <1>
