Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On an easy-angled, grassy field behind a shingle beach lies a rectangular structure, c 8 m long by 3 m wide, and 0.5 m high. The structure has square corners and has a turfed-over stone face visible along the sides, which are bowed. At the east end there appear to have been stones heaped up, with the west end revealing stones up to two courses high. The structure may have been used as a clearance-heap, or possibly a kelp-kiln, similar to those at Sangobeg. <1>
