Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

Along the east bank of the river flowing into the Kyle below Kirkiboll, is a stretch of dry-stone revetment. This revetment is up to 1 m high and follows the river-bank for c 80 m. This is within the tidal range and has been constructed to defend the land at the rear. The further towards the Kyle the revetment runs, the more ruinous it becomes. This could have been caused by high tides and/or the river spating. <1>
