Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On unimproved pasture on a raised-beach is a complex of drainage-channels and dykes. There is a canalised burn, running SW-NE downslope from a N-S dyke at the top of the field. There are up-cast boulder and turf-clad banks at either side. Running N-S at right-angles to this is a channel with up-cast banks which runs for 40 m and is now silted-up. This is part of a quite elaborate drainage-system in this boggy area. <1>
