Full Description
A hut circle, 8m in diameter, in association with a field boundary wall at Allt Nan Carnan.
A circular stone-walled hut levelled into a S-facing slope and measuring 8m between centres of a wall spread to 1.5m The entrance is in E. What appears to be a contemporary field wall runs to W for 12m from NW arc before abruptly turning S down hill to end by a burn. A similar but less well-preserved wall runs to NE from N side of entrance and terminates on a crag 50m distant. Together with the crag and the stream, these walls enclose an area about 90m E-W by 60m N-S, which is featureless except for a few shielings which occupy SE corner. There is no other trace of contemporary cultivation.
Surveyed at 1/10,000. Visited by OS (J M) 30 May 1974.
188627 841079 Allt Nan Carnan 1 PS010: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and P Swan in 2009 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The circular HC sits on a platform dug into a gentle slope with aspect to S. Average interior diameter is 6m, exterior diam 9m, double skinned wall thickness 0.6m, max wall height 0.3m. A possible entrance faces E. Few stones are visible and the structure is submerged in heather, grass and moss. Field walls forming an enclosure run from NW and N of HC, terminating on a crag and a stream respectively. There is a new forestry plantation nearby Two sheilings lie close to hut circle, as follows:
1. NG88688 41054 elevation 192m. Dimensions 3.35mX1.65m, wall thickness 0.6m. Door midway on S wall. Twinning pen 1m x 1.5m in NW corner. Possible turf walled structure continues wall lines to W.
2. NG 88701 41057 elevation 183m Long walls orientated E/W. Low turf covered wall footings. Length 3m width 2m. Semicircular feature adjoins E wall, radius 1.2m.
The HC is associated with PS007 (500m distant - see MHG57756), PS008 (500m - see MHG7655), PS009 (750m - see MHG7653). A coffin /drove road runs E/W around 100 m downslope from the HC. <1> <2>
