Full Description

NH58SW 1 5384 8224

The cottage that stands at the foot of Garbhan Mor, which was still roofed in 1968, probably overlies the westerly of the two unroofed buildings depicted at this location on the first edition of the OS 6"map (Ross-shire 1881,39). The cottage measures 12m by 6.4m overall and still stands over 2m high, but the outshot at the WSW end may belong to the earlier building. Immediately ENE of the cottage there are traces of what is presumably the easterly of the buildings depicted on the first edition OS 6"map. It has been set into a quarry scoop and measures at least 10.8m by 5.5m overall; what may be a second compartment some 6m in length is visible at the NE end.
Visited by RCAHMS (SPH) 15 November 1989.

A DBA and walkover survey were carried out by GUARD in 2009 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Glenmorie.

Site 1: Located on a level area of ground that has been created by cutting into the hillside and building up the ground infront of it. The most recent structure isa rectangular shaped, ruinous, building of drystone construction with lime mortar bonding. It measures c. 13 m by 5 m with the walls exist to 6 courses, 2 m, in height and are up to 0.8 m in height. It is orientated east to west and consist of two rooms each with a door on the southern side. The eastern room also has a window on the southern side. Another room or annex extends off the western end of the building. Just to the east of the building two further areas of disturbance possibly indicate older phases of building. Here, two rectangular areas have been cut into the hillside. One of these contains the foundations of a grass and heather covered 'L' shaped section of walling. To the south of this artificial plateau containing the structural remains and located next to the track is an oval shaped quarry. <1>
