EHG354 - Walkover survey - Caplich Woodlands, (WGS)
Technique(s)
Organisation
Archaeological Services
Date
March-May 1998
Description
A rapid archaeological assessment was undertaken by J Harden of Archaeological Services in 1998 of an area proposed for a Woodland Grant Scheme (WGS) at Caplich, Strath Oykel, Sutherland. The survey was undertaken on days in March and May when the vegetation was low and growth was only just beginning in the slightly warmer spring climate.
The whole of the outline application area was walked, including those areas that had been identified as being outwith the two fenced areas for afforestation. This was undertaken so that if the plans were amended there would be no need for further rapid archaeological assessment work. Photographs were taken of the sites recorded, to aid identification in advance of woodland operations.
Several new archaeological sites were recorded and recommendations were made to avoid them during planting operations. Nevertheless, it was considered that there was the possibility that archaeological features may be found as planting operations were undertaken, particularly in areas where the peat may have covered stone-built features completely. New discoveries should be avoided and reported immediately to the Highland Council's Archaeology Service. <1>
