Date
September 1999
Description
They survey covered an area of 19.6 ha on the north-east side of Breag a' Bhata some 0.5 km to the north-east of Pittentrail, Rogart, Sutherland over two compartments. Compartment 1 lay on the north-east facing slopes of a low ridge overlooking Rogart to the north-east. Compartment 2 lay 200 m to the south on the north-east facing slopes of Creag a' Bhata. The areas were largely covered in low heather with the exception of the lower eastern slope of Compartment 1 which was covered in dense birch wood. They survey area was systematically walked by a team of two archaeologists and all features of archaeological interest were described and located using a Total Station. The southern boundary of Compartment 1 ran across open ground, not following existing fences or landmarks. Due to the uncertainty of the exact position of the boundary in the field, some of the cairns surveyed were found to be situated outside the WGS boundary when plotted on to the OS map base. <1>
