Full Description

An archaeological survey at Rothiemurchas was undertaken by Dr T C Welsh in 1993.

Within 100 m NW of Forest Cottage, (fig 8b), at the south end of a ridge overlooking the north end of Loch an Eilein. This is a similar site to (14), but is overlain by a later occupation. The inner circuit is oval 13 to 16 metres across, over 2 m bank, with first a slight scarp 3 to 4 m distant, bowed out on east, to merge with an outer wall 2 to 3 m thick giving an overall diameter of 34 m. Set on the outwork on the NW is a 4m square mound of stones. About 20 m north of the site is an arc of rectangular pits each 4 to 5 m long by 1.3 m wide, with mounds of stones and large rocks, and 6m beyong this a length of bank. The remaining aspects of the site are fairly steep. The overlying structures comprise a rubble walled oval 10 x 7Im divided in two, 6m diameter circular hut over 2 m wall on west, and 7 x 5 m subrectangular structure, all three partly overlying the north and west sides of the inner defence. The site is in woodland. <1>
