Technique(s)

Organisation

Glasgow University (GUARD)

Date

Sept 95-Jan 96

Description

A programme of geophysical prospection at the site of a construction of a new sewage treatment works at Allanfearn, near Inverness (see EHG469), indicated the presence of a number of archaeological features. Trial trenching by GUARD in Sept-Oct 1995 targeted on the areas identified by the geophysics confirmed the presence of archaeological activity and full excavation comprising nine trenches covered two fields followed in Nov 95-Jan 96. A total of nine boreholes and thirteen test-pits were also dug across the two fields. Some were placed within trenches located over geophysical anomalies which therefore potentially contained archaeological features. Overall, features were widely spread over the fields and included the partial remains of a house structure, a probable burial mound and a cremation burial. <1> Note: there are no plans in the report that show the initial trial trenching, test pits and bore holes phase from Sept-Oct 1995.
