EHG5374 - Trial trenching - proposed new substation site, Connagill

Technique(s)

Organisation

Catherine Dagg

Date

Sept 2013-Jan 2014

Description

Trial excavations on the site of a new substation at Connagill, Sutherland, were undertaken by C Dagg in 2013-14. A total of ten features were investigated in nine trenches, excavated down to a natural surface, with the exception of Trench 9, at hut circle 2. Trench corners were plotted using total station accurate to -1cm. Five mounds were excavated to 25% and one to 50%, while slot trenches were laid across one linear feature and at the edge of two possible hut circles. All the mounds and the linear feature appeared to be the results of field clearance, while results at the two hut circles were, at this stage, inconclusive. The trench at the second roundhouse (trench 9), was subsequently developed into full excavation (see EHG5375). The first roundhouse, trench 8, survived intact outwith the development area. <1> NOTE: Only seven of the nine trenches are given grid references in the report.
