Full Description

A charcoal burning platform at Glen Suileag on the Fassfern Estate.

An archaeological walkover survey in areas proposed for forestry work on the Fassfern Esatate was carried out by J Wordsworth in 2000. This revealed a number features in this area. At NN 0256 8101 on the S bank of a burn, probably the Alt an Daraid and some 80m above the road, is a distinct oval platform 7m east-west by 8m north-south. It was overplanted with Sitka 37 years ago, though these have been partly removed in thinning. It has been little damaged by ploughing and remains one of the most visible of the platforms on the whole estate. <1>

The site was recorded again during a pre-harvesting survey by Scottish Woodlands in 2021. The grid reference is c.20m to the southwest of that recorded in 2000, but fits better with the original location given in the description. <2>
