EHG3331 - Walkover survey at Strath Lunndaidh

An archaeological desk-based study and subsequent walk-over survey of Strath Lunndaidh, to the west of Golspie in East Sutherland, was undertaken in November 2009. A supplementary survey was carried out in February 2010, to explore an adjacent area. The survey was required by Scottish Woodlands Ltd to establish the extent of archaeological remains, which would, in turn, determine the viability of planting trees. The survey area comprises a strip of land approximately 1.7km x 0.3km (48 hectares) of gently to moderately sloping hill ground, above and to the NE of Loch Lunndaidh. It is situated approximately 4km to the west of the village of Golspie on the east coast of Sutherland and is accessed, via a track which serves the dam on the loch, from the A9 trunk road at Drummuie, just to the SW of Golspie. The initial survey resulted in the recording of 18 archaeological features, none of which had previously been recorded. The supplementary survey resulted in the recording of a further 23 archaeological features, only one of which had previously been recorded. <1>
