EHG495 - Desk based assessment and walkover survey, Scalpay WGS

An archaeological pre-afforestation survey, including desk-based assessment and rapid walkover survey, of three land units on the island of Scalpay, Skye was carried out. The areas have been proposed for new native woodland plantings under the Woodland Grants Scheme. The desk-based assessment demonstrated that only 2 archaeological sites hadpreviously been recorded close to the designated areas, although further possible sites were identified on the relevant Ordnance Survey sheets of the area. The rapid walkover survey recorded the remains of 38 new archaeological sites including farmsteads, shieling groups, 1 hut circle and 4 prehistoric lithic scatter sites. <1>
